The Bapco Caterham Gulf 7 Championship
MME working with the BIC and events organisers Motion Works will be starting the 2005 Caterham Championship in September. Caterham have already enjoyed many years of competitive racing all around the world, this will be the first time they will lay down rubber in the Middle East.
The Development of the Championship
The Duratech power plants used in the Caterham G7s are de-tuned to promote reliability and safe racing for beginners. However this also means that once the Caterham Gulf Championship is well established the series can evolve to faster more powerful cars with relative ease. The same 2.3 Litre engine is used, therefore drivers should be able to home their skills in a 160 bhp G7 then after the first season up-grade and race in a 210 bhp category. This still leaves the engine with more un-tapped power as with further modifications bhp rating of 260 and above is achievable from the Cosworth engine. Also as stated in other sections the Caterham G7 is a bespoke race car for the Middle East Market. Therefore only drivers in the Bapco Caterham Gulf 7 Championship will experience these cars, Caterham will continue to develop the Caterham 7 which should facilitate the G7. Also an integral part of the G7 series is that since the G7 is only available in the Middle East and through MME all cars will be identical. It will be driver skills which takes the win and not the biggest engine or largest wallet. The series is also guaranteed for longevity as the G7 is the only Caterham to come to the Middle East. Other single make series only run for one season as new spec cars and chassis are introduced the next year, the Caterham G7 will remain the same spec for a number of years ensuring drivers who come into the series at a later date will have no unfair advantages. This also ensures that the older drivers and owners can stay competitive and have little depreciation on the vehicle.
Race Dates will be based on the existing National Race Days on the BIC Calendar, however additional events may be scheduled on track or special stages put on.
